PBIS/Social Emotional Learning at OMS
Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) is a program supported by Oskaloosa Middle School to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. It is a school-wide strategy, marrying the idea that when good behavior and quality teaching come together, our students will excel in reaching their social, emotional, and academic potential. At OMS, we focus on the expectations of being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, and CARING. These PBIS expectations help reinforce our building's much larger Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) initiative, centered around 5 Core Competencies (Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Resposible Decision-Making).
In creating a positive learning culture at OMS, we have established several clear expectations for the desired behaviors in all areas of our school. We explicitly teach those expectations to our students and reward them frequently with different forms of affirmation, including “Caught Ya” tickets, incentives, recognition, and prizes. The expectations for all student behavior are clear throughout each classroom, our commons, the restrooms, and our hallways. They are intentionally taught at the start of the day during Advisory class and are reinforced throughout the rest of the day across all classrooms.
These expectations and lessons specifically address building-wide expectations, create a safe and secure school environment, and maximize student instructional time. By providing detail for every expected behavior, and delivering SEL instruction to our students in a positive way, we provide a common language for everyone in our building to live by, including students, teachers, and all support staff.
We believe expected behavior learned in school amongst our students will produce a school culture where all students feel that they have a place where they can learn, succeed, and grow. We also believe in the power of parent/guardian partnerships. We always welcome your input and your involvement in our building, knowing that together we can create a positive school and community climate and culture.
