Allergy Aware District Statement:
We wanted to reach out to you to let you know that like most schools in the United States, we have students in ours that have severe food allergies. Children with food allergies can have life threatening reactions with exposure to even tiny amounts of allergens. Therefore, the Oskaloosa School District is an “ALLERGY AWARE” district.
There are certain things that can be done to minimize the risk to our students. What that means for our district:
We will strive to avoid offering foods containing nuts, nut oils, or nut derivatives, and fish or shellfish in our school meal program.
We will establish an allergy-aware environment for the safety of children who have food allergens and for those children who have yet to be identified allergic to these products.
We will encourage all parents to avoid sending lunches, snacks, or treats to school that contain these allergens (nuts, nut oils, or nut derivatives).
We will offer “nut free” zones/tables in all our lunchrooms. Individual students who have nut products in their lunches should not sit in these zones.
All snacks and treats brought (by students, parents, or teachers) to be consumed in the classroom must be allergen free. Classroom snacks and treats will be examined in the school office for food allergens before being sent to the classroom.
We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our students safe. If you have any specific questions, please reach out to the school nurse in your child’s building.
